An ad hoc committee of IFNA members, Dr. Wendy Looman and Dr. Paula Nersesian along with Katie Huffling has developed an IFNA Position Statement on Planetary Health and Family Health that is now available in 3 versions in English. Feedback was provided by the IFNA Education Committee, IFNA Practice Committee, and IFNA Research Committee.  Expert reviewers and IFNA member feedback were also solicited. The IFNA Position Statement on Planetary Health and Family Health was approved by the IFNA Board of Directors on April 9, 2020.

The International Family Nursing Association (IFNA) Position Statement on Planetary Health and Family Health asserts that “family nursing will become increasingly important as changes in the earth’s ecosystems impose unprecedented challenges to families around the world. All nurses should understand the principles of planetary health, how changes in the earth’s ecosystems affect families, and what nurses can do to promote health, adaptation, and resilience of individuals and families.”

The message of this newest IFNA Position Statement couldn’t be more timely for family nursing and family health in light of the evidence that the shelter-in-place COVID19 policies around the world are making a positive difference to the ecosystems of our planet.
