Janet A. Deatrick, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, Director for the Center for Health Equity Research, and Shearer Endowed Term Chair in Healthy Community Practices. She is an Associate Editor for Health Psychology, on the Editorial Board for Journal of Family Nursing, and is a permanent member of the NIH Nursing and Related Clinical Sciences Study Section. Dr. Deatrick studies family management of children who have chronic conditions and adolescent and young adults who survived brain tumours.
Dr. Deatrick collaborates with the Survivorship, Neuro-Oncology, and Psychosocial Oncology Teams at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She contributes to their research, research training, and research agendas in terms of parenting within a family context and the use of qualitative and mixed methods research methods. These teams have also actively contributed to clinical/theoretical education, research training, and research agendas at the School of Nursing and specifically with Dr. Deatrick.
Dr. Deatrick’s research focuses on family caregiving and the quality of life of adolescent and young adult survivors of childhood brain tumors. In addition, Dr. Deatrick and Dr. Kathleen Knafl have collaborated since the late 1970s regarding the development of the Family Management Framework, encouraging scientific discoveries regarding the crosscutting issues involved in family caregiving in childhood and across the life-cycle, including end-of-life.
