Dr. Joanna Smith is a Lecturer in Children’s Nursing at the School of Healthcare, University of Leeds, United Kingdom. She emphasizes that she is, “first and foremost a children’s nurse” with 15 years of clinical experience, primarily caring for children and their families with complex needs requiring surgery, which informs her teaching and research, Her main research interests relate to the way in which health professionals’ work with and involve children, young people and their families in decisions about their care, in the context of children with long-term conditions. Although she is involved in a range of research methods, she primarily uses qualitative methods. She has successfully supervised several PhD students whose topics link to the focus of her research, for example, parent-child shared-decision making in asthma, and involving parents in their child’s pain care.
