Tracie Risling is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary and the President of the Canadian Nursing Informatics Association. Her program of health and nursing informatics research includes study on, social media, artificial intelligence, and the co-designed access and use of digital health resources. Dr. Risling is a passionate advocate for increased nursing engagement in the development, deployment, and use of digital solutions, including social media.

The purpose of this webinar is to walk you through the process of abstract development and submission to help you create an excellent abstract for submission for the (virtual) 15th International Family Nursing Conference. Samples of abstracts for different types of work will be shared. Tips on what to include under each abstract heading will be highlighted. The goal is that your abstract will be accepted for the conference! The abstract submission deadline is October 26, 2020. Ample time for audience input and questions will be provided during the webinar.

Who Should Attend

Nurses who are thinking about presenting papers or posters at the 15th International Family Nursing Conference. Nurses from around the world who are engaged or interested in family research, practice, education, and policy are encouraged to present.

Learning Objectives

• Review sample abstracts for varied types of projects (e.g., quantitative and qualitative studies, methodological papers, educational and clinical projects, policy papers) to identify key components of successful abstracts.
• Participate in the process of refining abstracts for increased clarity and organization, and scientific rigor.
• Identify the major steps in the online abstract submission process.

Additional Information

If English is not your first language, you do not need to talk during the webinar. You will have the opportunity to type questions and/or provide comments. You just need a computer, internet connection, and speakers. An archival recording of the webinar will be available on the IFNA website.

Developing Family Care & Communication Skills in Simulation

Objectives:

1. Familiarization with the Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric (VGFCR).
2. Apply rubric to simulation video assessing family care and communication skills.
3. Explore the potential applications of the VGFCR.

The Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric (VGFCR) was developed to provide nurse educators with a research-based tool to measure the family communication and assessment skills of healthcare students and staff during the debriefing stage of simulation. The rubric focusses on and measures the skills needed for optimum family nursing practice. The evidence-based constructs were developed from a comprehensive literature review originally conducted in 2015 and updated in 2018. An international, multi-site research study has validated the Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric and found this tool to be reliable for use with practicing nurses and students.
Participants attending the webinar will be introduced to the family-focused care and communication constructs of the rubric. Participants will observe a simulation video which was conducted at Children’s National Medical Center during the IFNC14 pre-conference workshop. Participants will have opportunity to apply the rubric using an online survey. This will be followed by a facilitated discussion on how the rubric can frame feedback for learners. Finally, we will discuss how this tool could be incorporated into their own simulation and educational programs.

This program is particularly relevant for all nursing educators interested in learning more about a research-based tool to measure family communication and assessment skills
of healthcare students and staff during the debriefing stage
of simulation.

Amanda Garrow PhD, RN is a Simulation Education Specialist at Children’s National Health System and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington DC. The focus of her work is inter-professional in situ simulation which emphasises important concepts such as communication and teamworking skills and a focus on enhancing patient safety and quality improvement. She is an experienced nurse educator who has served as a faculty member in both under graduate and post graduate nursing education in the United Kingdom. Her doctoral degree was conferred by the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom and explored the use of simulation in under graduate nurse education. Her clinical background is in Pediatric Emergency where she practiced as an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.

 Stacey Van Gelderen DNP, MS, RN, PHN
Associate Professor, Minnesota State University, Mankato

Dr. Stacey Van Gelderen is an associate professor at Minnesota State University, Mankato, USA. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from St. Catherine University in Minnesota. For the past 20 years, Dr. Van Gelderen’s teaching and clinical practice focus includes working with the obstetric, neonatal and pediatric populations. Dr. Van Gelderen serves on the IFNA Education Committee and Simulation, Technology and Informatics Sub-committee. Her research interests include developing a family focused electronic health record called SAFE-HR and recent international, multi-site research study validating the Van Gelderen Family Care Rubric to assist educators in developing nursing staff and students’ family care and communication skills.
