Kristen Abbott-Anderson PhD, RN, CNE, is an associate professor, School of Nursing, Minnesota State University, Mankato (USA). She has a passion for building relationships in the face of chronic health conditions, with a specific focus on individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Her practice experience is in ADRD and women’s health across the lifespan. Her current research focuses on enhancing quality of life for individuals living with ADRD through facilitating meaning-making programs designed to enhance connectedness between the individual with ADRD and their care partner (CP). Garden EngAGEment is one example of a meaning-making program developed by Dr. Abbott-Anderson and interdisciplinary colleagues. This program, inclusive of student volunteers, provides individuals with ADRD and their care partner the opportunity to participate in a community gardening experience. Weekly programming such as “would you rather” activities engage participants in a safe, dementia-friendly environment. Outcomes of research include enhanced quality of and purpose in life. In addition to her passion for research, Dr. Abbott-Anderson values interacting with and mentoring pre-licensure and graduate nursing students. To date she has mentored over 15 student projects, which have all been presented at local, regional, national, and international conferences.
