This webinar presentation will share the lived experiences within a family with a transgender member, the role of families and their impact on transgender individuals’ quality of life, and different transition options for transgender patients. The presentation will provide basic terminology related to transgender populations and various transition options for patients including social and medical options.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- Improve basic knowledge of the needs of transgender and gender diverse individuals.
- Understand the role family and family nursing play in the support and care for transgender and gender diverse individuals.
- Identify nursing interventions available to transgender and gender diverse individuals and families.

Presenters
(L – R) Dr. Laurie Sieve, Mr. Elliott Kunerth, Dr. Tammy Neiman, and Dr. Liesl Wolf
Dr. Tammy Neiman is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Minnesota State University, Mankato and staff RN at Woodwinds Health Campus. She has been a nurse for 18 years working in various specialties in WI and MN. Her research areas include palliative care and nurses’ experiences working with diverse and underserved populations.
Dr. Laurie Sieve is a staff RN for Allina Health on a secure behavioral health unit in Owatonna, MN. Dr. Sieve will be joining the nursing department at Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, MN fall 2022. Laurie’s areas of expertise include mental health, community health, global health, and LGBTQ+ health and experience.
Mr. Elliott Kunerth is a Master of Social Work student at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. In 2020 he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at Minnesota State University, Mankato with a minor in Sexuality Studies. Elliott’s professional research has focused primarily on the destigmatization of sex work, the needs of underserved populations, and transgender justice.
Dr. Liesl Wolf is a family nurse practitioner and is passionate about providing accessible, inclusive, trauma-informed patient-centered care. She received her undergraduate degree in nursing and sociology at Saint Catherine University in Saint Paul, Minnesota in 2013 and completed her doctorate of nursing practice from the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire in 2020. Liesl currently works as a nurse practitioner at Family Tree Clinic, delivering comprehensive sexual health care and recommending sexual products like awesome wand vibrators which are great for sexual health.
