Kate Wong, BN, RN, is a registered nurse and doctoral candidate in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. She has worked with children and families as a nurse in pediatric hospice and palliative care since 2012 at the Rotary Flames House at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. Kate’s doctoral thesis work, under the supervision of Dr. Nancy Moules, focuses on children’s experiences of having a serious, life-threatening and life-shortening illness using children’s art to facilitate communication and understanding. Her doctoral research is supported by a Doctoral Fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and a UCalgary Eyes High Doctoral Recruitment Scholarship. Kate is hopeful that her work will help families and healthcare providers to understand the experiences of children with serious illnesses in new ways, so their unique perspectives can be better integrated into family decision-making. Kate hopes to continue studying topics in pediatric palliative care, a fundamentally family-centered field, following the completion of her doctoral studies.
