Each year, International Nurses Day on the 12th of May recognizes the contributions of nurses worldwide. These year’s theme was Nursing: A Voice to Lead. Sparked by an idea from IFNA President Veronica Swallow, the IFNA Communications Committee sent out a request for members to share photos on Twitter using #NursesDay or #IND2022 and tag @IFNAorg to document the ways in which they were marking International Nurses Day. For ideas, we pointed them to the PhotoVoice method, asking them to consider sharing images of what family nursing and family health means to them in terms of education, practice, or research.
It was envisioned that these tweets could provide a valuable source of pride and support for IFNA members globally and foster an opportunity to share news about events. The International Council of Nurses and the Royal College of Nursing shared resources about their campaigns to highlight International Nurses Day and ways others could participate.
Barbie Giambra (@BKGiambra) posted a screenshot of her and a group of her IFNA colleagues working via Zoom on a systematic review.
The Institute for Implementation Science at the University of Zurich posted a highlight of the work of IFNA member Rahel Naef (@NaefRahel).
IFNA Board member Suja Sommanadhan (@sujas15) posted a screenshot of the IFNA Board of Directors meeting via Zoom, highlighting this year’s theme for International Nurses Day. Fellow Board members Lindsay Smith (@DrLindsaySmith) and Junko Honda (@Junko_H) reposted and commented on Suja’s original tweet.
Lindsay also reposted a tweet from the International Council of Nurses, which released their report titled “A Voice to Lead: Investing in nursing and respect rights to secure global health,” providing a link for nurses in Australia and New Zealand to participate in a survey to make their voices heard.
Paula Nersesian (@PaulaNersesian), who is a member of the IFNA Research Committee and liaison to the Communications Committee, posted a photo of her and a colleague from the University of Southern Maine as they closed out their semester.
Finally, IFNA President Veronica Swallow (@SwallowVeronica) shared the photos below from the events at Sheffield Hallam University.
We appreciate everyone’s participation in this effort to highlight the tremendous work being done globally by our members to support family nursing and family health!
