Sarah Ogilvie Examines the Challenges Faced by Families of School-Aged Children With Type 1 Diabetes

Sarah Ogilvie BSN, RN, PHN, LSN, CPHQ, is a graduate student in the Family Nurse Practitioner/Doctor of Nursing Practice Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato, (USA) and a member of the IFNA Student Engagement Group. Her research focuses on how to better understand the challenges faced by families who have school-aged children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM). She is leading a project, Thriving with DM: Beyond the Numbers, that involves conducting family interviews with families who have children with diabetes. This study also explores the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on these families. Data will be used to develop family programs for families struggling with diabetes and identify ways to improve support to these families from school nurses. This project is a partnership between Minnesota State University, Mankato, nurses, a large urban public school district, and a nurse-led free health clinic.

 

Sarah has received a Graduate Student Research grant from Minnesota State University, and a Becky Taylor Fellowship from the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society to help support her research.

 

Sarah is also a 2021 recipient of a conference grant from the International Family Nursing Foundation to support her attendance at the 15th International Family Nursing Conference (IFNC15).
