Teaching Family Nursing to Psychiatric Nursing Students

By the end of the webinar participants will:
- Identify historical and current factors constraining psychiatric nurses’ engagement with families
- Consider genograms as an anti-stigma intervention
- Identify common questions about the role of psychiatric nurses with families.
- Participate in co-constructing helpful responses to these questions.
- Incorporate the application of the 15 minute interview principles into practice.
The presenters for this webinar will discuss their experience teaching family nursing skills to Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing students. The geo-political and historical contexts of psychiatric nursing will be introduced. The evolution of psychiatric nursing practice and education philosophies will be briefly traced and linked to CFAM and CFIM. Location of this course within the BScPN curriculum will be discussed to illustrate the laddering of counselling theory and skills. An overview of the course, including theory and lab assignments and objectives will be provided.
Target Audience
This program is particularly relevant for all nursing educators interested in learning more about teaching family nursing skills to Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing students.
Presenters
Fiona Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Faculty of Health Studies. She came to Brandon University in 2002 with 20 years of clinical experience in community, emergency, out-patient and in-patient settings. She has taught family counselling theory and labs each year of her time with the BScPN program.
Jennifer Adair, BA (Adv), BScPN, RPN
Jennifer Adair is an Instructional Associate with the Department of Psychiatric Nursing at the Winnipeg Campus. She has been a Registered Psychiatric Nurse since 2009, and has experience working in the fields of adult inpatient mental health, addiction and education. Since starting at Brandon University in 2012, she has taught the theory course Introduction to Interpersonal Communication and facilitated practice labs for Individual Counselling, Group Counselling, and Family Counselling. Jennifer is currently a student in the Master of Psychiatric Nursing Program through Brandon University. questions.
