Natalie McAndrew, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CCRN-K, is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing, USA. She is a member of the IFNA Acute Care Research Cluster. Her research focuses on the family experience during life-threatening illness and the delivery of family care in intensive care units (ICU). Suboptimal family care in the ICU may result in families experiencing adverse outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress. She studies factors that influence family care including interprofessional collaboration, ethical conflict and moral distress, burnout, nursing practice environments, and health care systems.
In her research, she uses many family health-oriented measurement resources. They include the Family Centered Care Survey-Adult (Mitchell et al.), tools from the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment and Adaptation (McCubbin & McCubbin), Iceland-Family Perceived Support Questionnaire (ICE-FPSQ) (Sveinbjarnardottir et al.), Critical Care Family Satisfaction Survey (Wasser et al.), Family Satisfaction in the ICU (Heyland et al.), and the Questionnaire on the Factors that Influence Family Engagement (Hetland).
Dr. McAndrew’s vision is to improve family outcomes by developing interventions that enhance the quality of family care. Key areas include: (1) improving nurse practice environments, (2) interprofessional ethical decision-making and training in family care, (3) family involvement in the ICU, (4) integration of palliative and hospice care within the ICU environment, and (5) development of structured family support programs during and after critical illness.
Her recent scholarly recognitions include the 2018 American Thoracic Society Abstract Scholarship, the 2018 Froedtert Nursing Research Award for Climate of Care, Nursing Family Care, and Family Well-being in Intensive Care Units, and the 2017 University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee College of Nursing Outstanding Student Award.
