Marcia Van Riper, PhD, RN, FAAN, Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA, recently received a Fulbright US Senior Specialist Award which provides funding to develop linkages between U.S. scholars and their counterparts at host institutions overseas. Dr. Van Riper is visiting the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain where she is offering lectures and seminars on a variety of topics related to family nursing, family research, genomics, and the ethical, legal, and social implications of advances in genomics. This visit provides an opportunity to begin data collection with Spanish families of individuals with Down syndrome for her ongoing cross-cultural study on adaptation and resilience in families of individual with Down syndrome. Dr. Van Riper and her research team, many of whom are IFNA members, currently have data from over 1,300 parents in 10 countries (Brazil, Ireland, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Portugal, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States). Dr. Van Riper was recognized as a Fulbright Scholar in 2012-2013 to visit Ireland. Dr. Van Riper served as the First President of IFNA from 2010-2013.
