Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM): What Has Evolved and Changed over 30 Years in Families, Practice and the Model

Dr. Leahey is a consultant, author, educator and clinician. She is the co-developer of the Calgary Family Assessment Model which has been adopted by many faculties and schools of nursing and hospital settings in over 26 countries. Maureen is co-author of five books including Nurses and Families: A Guide to Family Assessment and Intervention, sixth edition (2013). It has been translated into eight languages, Spanish, Japanese, French, Portuguese, Swedish, German, Icelandic and Korean. She co-produced the “How To” Family Nursing DVD Series (www.familynursingresources.com) and has delivered over 70 presentations at international conferences and presented at numerous national and local conferences.
Program / Event Description:
The co-originator of the Calgary Family Assessment Model (CFAM) will discuss changes in families and the model since its conception. Changes in families with increased diversity in family structure, development and functioning as well as the demographic and social changes in North America have affected the assessment model. Changes in practice and evidence based skills have influenced the evolution of the model. Practice linkages between the model and various clinical settings will be highlighted. The influence of these changes for family nursing education and practice will also be addressed.

At the end of the session, participants should be able to:
- describe shifts in family structure, development, and functioning and their impact on the use of CFAM in family nursing practice
- appreciate the influence of nurses’ beliefs on the evolution of CFAM
- adapt evidence based practice and practice based evidence in using CFAM in various clinical settings
