IFNA History

Planning for an organized association for Family Nursing began in earnest at the 7th International Family Nursing Conference in Victoria, British Columbia – Canada and has continued ever since. At that time, a coordinating committee* was formed and they were charged to explore options for an association and completed the initial work toward launching the association.

The International Family Nursing Association (IFNA) is now incorporated. A meeting was held at the 9th IFNC held June 2-5, 2009 in Reykjavik, Iceland and those in attendance at this meeting unanimously affirmed the inital proposed set of Bylaws.

The first election of officers took place November/December, 2009.

IFNA is a REALITY, an important step forward for family nursing worldwide.

The newly elected board includes a group of leaders in family nursing from around the world, Kobe, Japan – Reykjavik, Iceland – US – Canada. Their backgrounds and family interests reflect the diversity of family nursing. Their goal is to bring our collective expertise and commitment to family nursing to furthering the aims of IFNA. The Board already has met a number of times via conference calls. The discussions have been lively and enthusiastic. Our immediate goals for IFNA include:

• Working to develop all avenues for communication with and between members – especially highlighting electronic options
• Developing a strategic plan and needs assessment for the organization.
• Exploring possible options for group rates for existing family nursing organizations.
• Working to establish a sustainability plan for the organization.
• Cultivating an ongoing relationship between IFNA and the Glen Taylor Nursing Institute for Family and Society
